If you are living in the Philippines, married to a Filipina, and want to make the move permanent, you may want to change your admission status from temporary visitor (tourist) to non-quota immigrant visa under Section 13(a). In the past, this was not very easy to do. When I first considered changing my status, in 2006, there was a long list of requirements. By 2008, the process had been streamlined, so I applied. Once you complete the change in status, you can apply for an Alien Certificate of Registration (ACR) I-Card. The information you will find in this article applies to acquiring a [...]

  • New external post Admin Dale on ACR I-Card now required from the blog Expat 2 Phils .com – Group: Immigration in the group Immigration   5 months, 4 weeks ago · View

ACR I-Cards are now required for tourist visa’s if extended beyond 59 days! That, according to Bureau of Immigration ”MEMORANDUM ORDER NO. MCL-09-027″ dated 29 December 2009. Actually, this memorandum is the ”IMPLEMENTING RULES AND REGULATIONS (IRR) OF MEMORANDUM ORDER NO. MCL-09-024, DATED 23 NOVEMBER 2009″. Unfortunately, I was not able to get a link to that document, as internet explorer is currently saying the immigration.gov.ph website cannot be displayed. Not sure if it is their website, or my connection. Anyways, I was able to find another article that discusses the “New Visa Regulation for Tourists ACR-I-Card”.

Many foreigners who visit the Philippines stay here on a tourist visa. The initial stamp, that you get at the airport, is good for 21 days. If you want to stay longer, you can get an extension for another 38 days, bringing you up to 59 days. After that you can renew up to 2 months at a time for a total of 1 year. If you wish to stay longer, and still want to keep tourist status, you have to leave the country, and start over. You can find the fee structure for tourist visa’s at the Bureau of Immigration’s website . I’ve met [...]

Dual Citizenship is primarily for Filipinos who have acquired citizenship in another country, and would like to retain their Filipino citizenship. We include this topic on our site, as it applies to some spouses of expat’s. If you are a Filipino living outside the Philippines, your local Consulate General of the Philippines would be the place you would apply. Since I am from California, I will use the Consulate General of the Philippines in San Francisco as an example. Their page on Dual Citizenship has a FAQ, list of Requirements and Procedures and a downloadable Application Form. One thing I noticed, however, was [...]

  • I have heard stories of foreigners leaving the Philippines, even for a short time, getting the Balikbayan Visa on their return. But when I tried that, January 2008, I was told something completely different. The BOI officer said that visa is only when the Filipino was living overseas, and returns. Was this a change in policy, or has it always been that way? What is your experience?

Perhaps the most important advice I can give, on this topic, is to stay away from the small, local, BOI offices, where they can’t issue reciepts. They will probably charge you extra money, for their travels to a larger office, and maybe even keep your passport until they return, so the passport can be stamped. It is much better if you go to the larger/regional office yourself.

Will taking the Oath endanger their U.S. citizenship? No. According to a study prepared by the National Federation of Filipino American Associations (NAFFAA), a person will not lose his/her U.S. citizenship by merely pledging allegiance to another county. Such act can result in loss of U.S. citizenship only if done with an intention to relinquish U.S. citizenship. Since applicants for dual citizenship under this law generally do so with every intention to keep their U.S. citizenship and enjoy the benefits of citizenship in both countries, they are in no way intending to relinquish their U.S. citizenship. Moreover, NAFFAA assures that American citizenship [...]
